Steve Jacobson, PhD, Chief, Viral Immunology, NINDS, NIH

Dr. Jacobson and his Viral Immunology lab at the NINDS is the leading research lab involved in the exploration of HHV-6A & B in neurological diseases. Jacobson became interested in HHV-6B & epilepsy while studying the role of HHV-6A in Multiple Sclerosis. He worked with William Gaillard in the Clinical Epilepsy Section to study specimens from epilepsy resections and found that 2/3 were infected with HHV-6B at pathogenic levels. His lab also conducts basic research to study the mechanisms involved in viral pathogenesis.

William H. Theodore, MD, Chief, Clinical Epilepsy Section, NINDS, NIH

Dr. Theodore and his associates have worked closely with Steve Jacobson to demonstrate the association of HHV-6B with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) and explore the neurochemistry that would explain how a low grade chronic infection might result in seizures.
